5 Day Desert From Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

We begin our journey after breakfast, leaving behind the lively streets of Marrakech as we head into the majestic High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs steadily until we reach the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, at over 2,200 meters, it offers breathtaking panoramic views. We’ll stop along the way for photos and fresh air, passing through traditional Berber villages built into the hillsides.

By midday, we arrive at the remarkable Aït Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most iconic ksar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll walk through its narrow alleys and mud-brick architecture, where centuries of caravans once passed through, and more recently, many famous films were shot.

Next, we continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the Skoura palm grove, where ancient kasbahs are hidden among lush vegetation. As the sun begins to lower, we reach the Dades Valley, where we’ll settle into a cozy guesthouse surrounded by towering red cliffs and winding river canyons. Dinner is served here, warm, homemade, and full of flavor.

Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga Desert

We start our day by exploring the beautiful Dades Gorge. The road winds through dramatic rock formations, nicknamed the “Monkey Fingers” for their curious shapes. After a few scenic stops and short walks, we head east toward Todra Gorge, another spectacular natural wonder.

Todra is a favorite place to stretch our legs. We’ll walk along the base of the 300-meter cliffs as the sound of running water echoes between the stone walls. It’s a peaceful and powerful place, and always cooler in the shade of the gorge.

In the afternoon, we make our way to the edge of the Sahara. The road flattens as we reach Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up in front of us. Here, we switch from wheels to hooves: your camel caravan will be waiting to take you across the dunes at sunset. It’s a slow, magical ride through soft sand and golden light.

As night falls, we arrive at your desert camp, nestled in the heart of the dunes. After a traditional dinner, we gather around the fire for Berber music, storytelling, and stargazing. It’s quiet, beautiful, and unforgettable.

Day 3: Explore Merzouga

We rise early to catch the sunrise over the dunes, the colors change by the second, and the silence is unlike anything else. After breakfast, we begin a full day of desert exploration.

Our first stop is Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa musicians, descendants of Sub-Saharan Africans who settled here centuries ago. We’ll listen to their hypnotic rhythms and learn about their unique culture.

Next, we leave the paved roads behind and cross the black desert, a landscape of volcanic rock and wide, empty plateaus. We’ll visit a Berber nomad family living in a tent, where you’ll get a rare glimpse into their simple, traditional way of life. Hospitality is everything here, and tea is always offered.

We also explore old kohl mines, used during the French colonial period, and visit panoramic viewpoints along the Hamadas (stone deserts). For lunch, we either enjoy a warm meal with a local family or eat at a traditional auberge, depending on your preference.

By late afternoon, we return to Merzouga and check into a local guesthouse or desert hotel for a relaxing night with a hot shower, dinner, and views of the dunes from your room.

Day 4: Merzouga → Rissani → Agdz → Ouarzazate

After breakfast, we head west, stopping first in Rissani, the old capital of Tafilalt and the gateway to the Sahara. We’ll walk through its lively market, where locals come to trade spices, textiles, and even donkeys.

From there, we follow the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river oasis, lined with ancient kasbahs and endless date palms. We’ll stop for scenic views and photos along the way, especially near Agdz, where the landscape shifts into red rocks and green valleys.

By evening, we arrive in Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” thanks to its film studios and desert landscapes. We’ll spend the night here in a peaceful riad or hotel, with time to relax before dinner.

Day 5: Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou → Telouet Kasbah → Marrakech

We start the day with a short visit to Kasbah Taourirt, one of Ouarzazate’s most striking landmarks. From there, we return briefly to Aït Ben Haddou, if you want one last photo or a quick stop to see something you missed, we make time for that.

Next, we take the scenic road through the Ounila Valley, a quiet, less-traveled path lined with villages and stunning views, toward the remote Telouet Kasbah. Once the palace of the powerful Glaoui family, Telouet is rich in history and still holds the beauty of its painted ceilings and zellij tilework. We’ll take our time here and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of this lesser-known gem.

In the afternoon, we begin our descent back through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, winding once again through the High Atlas Mountains. As we cross over the peaks, we return to the vibrant life of Marrakech, arriving by early evening and dropping you off at your riad or hotel.
