Our adventure begins the moment we pick you up from your riad in Marrakech. I love this first morning; the energy is full of anticipation as we leave the vibrant city behind and begin our ascent into the magnificent High Atlas Mountains. The air cools, and the scenery becomes breathtakingly dramatic. We will wind our way up the Tizi n’Tichka pass, a road that feels carved into the very roof of North Africa, stopping at panoramic viewpoints that will leave you speechless. Along the way, you will see traditional Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides, a testament to a life lived in harmony with nature for centuries.

Our main stop for the day is the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. This is not just a filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones; it is a living, breathing UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through its ancient, sand-colored alleyways is like stepping back in time. You can feel the history in the walls and imagine the caravans that once passed through here, laden with spices and gold. After exploring this earthen city, we’ll continue our drive toward Ouarzazate, a quiet city known as the gateway to the Sahara.

The journey then takes us through the fragrant Valley of Roses and past countless ancient kasbahs, each with a story to tell. Our day ends in the stunning Dades Valley, a place of dramatic red rock formations known as the “monkey fingers.” Here, you will settle into a charming, family-run guesthouse, enjoy a delicious traditional dinner, and rest, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the gorge.

After a wonderful breakfast with views of the valley, our Dades Valley tour continues as we drive towards our next natural wonder: the Todra Gorges. These colossal canyon walls, carved by the Todra River, rise over 300 meters high, creating a spectacular natural corridor. We will have time to walk along the river, feel the cool air, and marvel at the sheer scale of the rock faces towering above us. It’s a truly humbling sight.

From Todra, the landscape begins its final, dramatic transformation. The mountains recede, and the earth becomes drier as we enter the pre-Saharan plains. We will pass through the towns of Erfoud, known for its rich fossil deposits, and Rissani, the ancient commercial center and birthplace of Morocco’s ruling Alaouite dynasty. Then, in the distance, you will see it: the first glimpse of the golden Erg Chebbi dunes. This moment is always magical.

Upon arrival in Merzouga, we will be greeted with traditional mint tea. Then, you will meet your camels for the unforgettable trek into the heart of the Sahara. The slow, rhythmic pace of the camels, the silence of the desert interrupted only by the soft padding of their feet on the sand, and the changing colors of the sky as the sun descends create a sense of pure peace. We will arrive at our comfortable desert camp just in time to watch the final rays of sun disappear behind the dunes. Your first evening in the Sahara includes a delicious traditional dinner, followed by Berber music and storytelling around a campfire, all beneath one of the most brilliant star-filled skies you will ever see.

Today is what makes this Morocco Sahara tour so special. After waking to a serene sunrise and enjoying breakfast, we dedicate the entire day to exploring the culture, landscapes, and life of the Sahara. We’ll trade our camels for a sturdy 4×4 vehicle and embark on a desert adventure. Our journey will take us across different desert terrains, from soft dunes to the hard-packed black desert, where we may even find rare fossils.

One of the most meaningful experiences of the day will be visiting a local nomad family. We will be welcomed into their traditional tent to share a glass of tea and learn about their centuries-old way of life. This is a humbling and authentic opportunity to connect with the people of the desert, whose hospitality is as vast as the landscape they call home.

Next, we will drive to the village of Khamlia, a small community famous for its Gnawa music. The inhabitants are descendants of people from sub-Saharan Africa, and their spiritual, soulful music is a deeply important part of their heritage. You will have a chance to listen to their powerful rhythms and feel the history in their songs. We will enjoy a traditional Berber pizza for lunch before returning to our camp in the afternoon. You’ll have free time to relax, try sandboarding on the high dunes, or simply find a quiet spot to read and absorb the profound silence of the desert. As evening approaches, you’ll witness another spectacular sunset, and your second night will feel even more magical, now that you have a deeper connection to this incredible place.

We recommend rising early this morning for another breathtaking Saharan sunrise. The soft morning light is truly spectacular. After breakfast at the camp, we will bid farewell to the dunes and begin our journey north towards Fes. While it is a day of driving, the scenery is constantly changing and absolutely beautiful.

Our Marrakech to Fes desert tour first takes us along the magnificent Ziz Valley, a stunning oasis where millions of palm trees create a vibrant ribbon of green that stretches for miles.

We will then ascend into the cooler climate of the Middle Atlas Mountains, a world away from the desert we just left. One of our favorite stops is in the Azrou cedar forest, the largest in Morocco, where we will have a chance to see the wild Barbary macaque monkeys in their natural habitat. They are often very friendly and playful.

Our final stop before Fes is in Ifrane, a charming town known as the “Little Switzerland of Morocco” for its clean streets, alpine-style houses, and beautiful parks. It offers one last, fascinating contrast on our journey. From there, it’s a smooth drive to our final destination. We will arrive in the ancient and spiritual city of Fes in the early evening, where we will drop you off at your hotel or riad, full of memories from an epic journey across the heart of Morocco.
