12 Day Morocco Desert Tour From Marrakech Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech Arrival and Moroccan Welcome

Your grand Morocco discovery tour begins the moment you land at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). You will be greeted by the warm Moroccan air and an even warmer welcome from your personal driver, who will be waiting to escort you to your accommodations.

We have hand-selected a beautiful, traditional riad for you, a peaceful oasis tucked away within the ancient medina walls. After you settle in, the rest of the day is yours to begin soaking in the atmosphere of the “Red City.” We suggest a gentle stroll to the legendary Djemaa el-Fna square as evening approaches.

Here, you will witness a spectacle of storytellers, musicians, and food stalls, offering your first taste of Morocco’s truly enchanting rhythm.

Day 2: The Visiting of Marrakech, Imperial City Exploration

Today is dedicated to a full immersion into the heart and history of Marrakech. After breakfast, you will meet your local licensed guide, an expert storyteller who will bring the city’s past to life.

Your guided tour will lead you through a tapestry of historical treasures, from the intricate tilework and serene courtyards of the Bahia Palace to the tranquil botanical paradise of the Jardin Majorelle. You will visit the ancient Saadian Tombs, a resting place of royalty hidden for centuries, and admire the magnificent silhouette of the Koutoubia Mosque.

The afternoon is for surrendering your senses to the vibrant chaos of the souks, a maze of alleyways filled with the scent of spices, the glimmer of lanterns, and the fine craftsmanship of local artisans.

As dusk falls, we will return to the electric energy of Djemaa el-Fna square to witness its full transformation into a dazzling open-air theater.

Day 3: Marrakech → High Atlas → Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

Your great adventure into the south begins. Leaving the city behind, we will ascend into the majestic High Atlas Mountains, navigating the breathtaking twists and turns of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The views from this altitude are simply stunning, offering a panoramic canvas of rugged peaks and lush valleys dotted with traditional Berber villages.

Our journey leads us to the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a true marvel of Moroccan earthen architecture. As you walk through its ancient, sun-baked walls, you will feel as though you have stepped onto the set of a historical epic.

After exploring this cinematic treasure, we continue to Ouarzazate, the ‘Hollywood of Africa’, before our path takes us through the beautiful Valley of the Roses and into the dramatic, rust-colored cliffs of the Dades Valley, where a comfortable and welcoming hotel awaits for the night.

Day 4: Dades Valley → Gorges of Todra → Dunes of Merzouga → Night in the camp

After a delicious breakfast overlooking the Dades Valley, we will marvel at its unique “monkey fingers” rock formations before continuing our journey. Our destination is the awe-inspiring Gorges of Todra, where the river has carved a spectacular canyon through towering rock walls that reach up to 300 meters high. We will take time for a short, peaceful stroll at the base of these cliffs, feeling humbled by the sheer power of nature.

From here, the landscape begins to transform, hinting at the vast Sahara that lies ahead. We will pass through the fossil town of Erfoud before reaching the village of Merzouga, standing at the edge of the magnificent Dunes of Merzouga. Here, your true Sahara adventure begins. You will trade your vehicle for a camel, your steadfast guide for a trek into the sea of golden Erg Chebbi dunes.

As the sun sets, casting a warm glow over the sand, you will arrive at your luxury desert tent, ready for an unforgettable night of traditional food, Berber music, and a sky full of a million stars.

Day 5: Merzouga Desert → Nomadic Families → Khamlia Village → Erg Chebbi Tour

Waking up to the serene silence of the desert and witnessing a breathtaking Sahara sunrise over the dunes is a memory you will cherish forever. After breakfast, we will dedicate the day to a deeper immersion into the culture and landscape of the desert.

Aboard a comfortable 4×4 vehicle, we will embark on a tour around the Erg Chebbi region. This is a unique opportunity to visit with genuine Nomadic Families in their traditional tents, share a cup of mint tea, and gain a humbling insight into their resilient and time-honored way of life.

We will then travel to Khamlia Village, where you will be captivated by a powerful performance of traditional Gnawa music, a soulful rhythm with deep historical roots. Depending on the season, we may also visit the ephemeral Merzouga Lake and explore the vast, rocky desert landscapes and oases that surround the dunes, painting a complete picture of life in the Sahara.

Day 6: Merzouga Desert → Ziz Valley → Middle Atlas → Cedar Forest → Ifrane → Fez

Today, we bid a fond farewell to the Sahara and begin our journey north towards the Imperial City of Fez. The drive itself is a remarkable experience, showcasing Morocco’s incredible diversity.

Our route will take us along the spectacular Ziz Valley, where you will enjoy panoramic views of one of the largest palm groves in the world, a lush river of green cutting through the arid landscape. We will then ascend into the Middle Atlas Mountains, a world away from the desert sands.

Here, we will make a special stop at the famous Cedar Forest near Azrou, where you can see and interact with the playful troops of Barbary macaques in their natural habitat. We will pass through the charming town of Ifrane, with its alpine-style architecture that has earned it the nickname “Morocco’s Switzerland,” before arriving in the ancient, spiritual city of Fez in the evening.

Day 7: Visit of the Medina and the Monuments of Fez

Prepare to be transported back in time. Today is dedicated to a full day of exploration in Fez, the profound cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco. Alongside a knowledgeable local guide, you will dive headfirst into the captivating labyrinth of Fez’s Medina (Fes el-Bali), a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage site that is one of the world’s largest living medieval cities.

Your Fes guided tour will be a sensory overload in the best possible way, from the historical depth of the Bou Inania Madrasa and the spiritual significance of the Al Quaraouiyine University and Mosque (the oldest in the world) to the vibrant, pungent spectacle of the Chouara Tanneries.

We will also explore the magnificent seven gates of the Royal Palace, discover the history of the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), and get lost in the endless wonders of the souks.

Day 8: Fez → Meknes → Volubilis → Chefchaouen

Our journey continues through Morocco’s rich history and stunning landscapes. After departing Fes, our first stop will be the impressive and remarkably well-preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis. Walking among its ancient columns, mosaics, and arches, you can almost hear the echoes of the Roman Empire. Next, we will explore the Imperial City of Meknes, a more relaxed but equally grand counterpart to Fez.

We will marvel at its monumental gates, particularly the magnificent Bab Mansour, and soak in the atmosphere of this historic capital. The day culminates with our arrival in the truly enchanting “Blue Pearl” of Morocco, Chefchaouen. As you enter its medina, the unique, calming azure-washed streets will immediately captivate you as you settle into your riad for the evening.

Day 9: Chefchaouen → Rabat → Casablanca

Enjoy a wonderful morning at your own pace, exploring the serene and impossibly picturesque streets of Chefchaouen. This is your time to get lost in its blue alleyways, shop for unique handicrafts, and capture lasting memories of one of Morocco’s most beautiful towns. In the afternoon, we will journey towards the Atlantic coast to Rabat, Morocco’s modern and elegant capital.

Here, you will experience its unique blend of coastal charm and historical significance with visits to iconic landmarks like the incomplete minaret of the Hassan Tower and the grand gates of the Royal Palace. We will conclude our day’s travel in Casablanca, Morocco’s bustling economic hub, where you can feel the vibrant pulse of modern Moroccan life.

Day 10: Casablanca to Marrakech, Coastal City Grandeur and Return

This morning, we will visit Casablanca’s most iconic landmark and a true jewel of Moroccan craftsmanship: the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. Standing proudly on the edge of the Atlantic, it is one of the largest mosques in the world and an absolute architectural masterpiece.

We will take time to admire its stunning exterior and intricate details. Afterwards, we will begin our comfortable journey back to Marrakech. This drive offers a perfect opportunity to relax and reflect on the incredible imperial cities, desert landscapes, and mountain passes you have experienced so far. Upon arrival in Marrakech, we will check you back into your riad, where you can enjoy a relaxing evening.

Day 11: Marrakech → Essaouira → Atlantic Coastal Escape

Today offers a delightful contrast to the journey so far. We will embark on a refreshing day trip to the charming coastal city of Essaouira. The scenic drive takes us through argan tree forests, where you might even spot the famous tree-climbing goats. Upon arrival, you will feel the immediate change in atmosphere, with a refreshing Atlantic breeze and the sound of seagulls.

You will have the full day to explore Essaouira’s captivating UNESCO-listed medina, walk along its historic sea ramparts, and watch the fishermen return to the bustling port with their iconic blue boats. The city’s relaxed, bohemian vibe is perfect for leisurely exploration. Unlike a standard day trip, you will spend the night here in Essaouira, allowing you to fully savor its magical evening charm and peaceful ambiance.

Day 12: Essaouira to Marrakech Airport

Enjoy a final, leisurely Moroccan breakfast in the tranquil atmosphere of Essaouira. You might choose to take one last stroll along its picturesque beach or browse the medina for some last-minute souvenirs. At the appropriate time, we will provide a comfortable and timely private transfer directly from your accommodation in Essaouira to Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) for your departure flight. You will leave with a heart full of memories, having experienced a truly grand Moroccan discovery that we were honored to share with you.

As someone who appreciates good planning, I was in awe of how impeccably organized this 12-day tour was. To coordinate a dozen different accommodations, activities, city guides, and transfers across an entire country without a single hiccup is a remarkable feat. True Morocco Travel delivered flawlessly. From the moment we were greeted at the Marrakech airport to our final drop-off, every single detail was handled with utter professionalism.
The selection of riads and hotels was outstanding. Each one was unique, beautiful, and perfectly located. The 4×4 vehicle was modern, always clean, and incredibly comfortable for the long drives. The local guides they arranged for us in Fes and Chefchaouen were true experts in their cities. There was never a moment of confusion or stress. This level of organization allowed us to completely switch off and immerse ourselves in the experience, knowing we were in the most capable hands. For a major, multi-week trip, this kind of peace of mind is priceless. I would trust True Morocco Travel with any itinerary, no matter how complex.

You spend a lot of time with your guide on a 12-day tour, and we hit the jackpot with Ismail. By day three, he wasn’t our guide anymore; he was our friend. By the end of the trip, he felt like family. Ismail’s kindness, humor, and incredible care for our well-being defined our entire experience in Morocco. He anticipated our every need, from having cold water ready after a walk to knowing the perfect spot for coffee. He taught our kids a few words of Arabic, shared stories of his own family, and made us laugh every single day.
He was a phenomenal driver and incredibly knowledgeable about every place we went, but it was his personal touch that made the difference. When my son felt a bit unwell one day, Ismail was so concerned and went out of his way to find a pharmacy and get him some Moroccan herbal tea that helped instantly. It’s that level of genuine care you can’t put a price on. Saying goodbye to him at the airport was genuinely sad, like leaving a dear friend behind. Yes, Morocco is beautiful, but our experience was unforgettable because of Ismail. True Morocco Travel, you have a true gem in him.

Having 12 days to explore Morocco allowed for a depth of experience that shorter tours could never provide. This felt less like a vacation and more like a genuine immersion into a different way of life. The extra time meant we could linger. We could have long conversations over mint tea, spend a whole afternoon getting lost (and found) in the Fes medina, and visit a nomad family in the desert without feeling like we were on a tight schedule.
Our guide, Hassan, understood that we wanted to connect with the culture, not just see the sights. He took us to small, family-run restaurants, explained the intricate social customs, and answered our endless questions with patience and wisdom. We learned about the history, the politics, the food, and the people in a way that felt so authentic. The highlight wasn’t just one place, but the cumulative feeling of starting to understand the rhythm of the country. If you want a trip that will change your perspective and stay with you long after you’ve returned home, this is the one. True Morocco Travel provides a truly meaningful experience.

This wasn’t just a tour; this was the grand, sweeping adventure through Morocco we had always dreamed of. In 12 days, we felt like we experienced the entire soul of the country, and we never once felt rushed. We started in the vibrant chaos of Marrakech, drove through the majestic High Atlas, and spent a magical night under the stars in the Sahara. From there, the journey continued to the ancient labyrinth of Fes, and then north to the stunning, blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen. The sheer variety was incredible.
Our guide, Omar, was the orchestrator of this perfect symphony. He managed every detail flawlessly and his passion for his country was infectious. He knew how to keep our teenage kids engaged, from telling stories about Gladiator at Ait Benhaddou to finding the best spot for photos in the blue city. This tour is for anyone who wants to do more than just scratch the surface. You see the Imperial Cities, the mountains, the desert, the north… you see it all. We came home feeling like we truly know and love Morocco. Thank you, True Morocco Travel, for the best family vacation we have ever had.
