Fes to Merzouga Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1 → Fes → Ifrane → Cedar Forest → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

Our adventure begins this morning as your private driver greets you in Fes. We will leave the ancient city behind and begin our scenic ascent into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The air will grow cooler and crisper as we arrive in Ifrane, a charming town whose alpine-style architecture will make you feel as if you have been momentarily transported to Europe. Shortly after, our journey takes us into the magnificent cedar forests, one of the most beautiful in Morocco. Here, we will stop so you can walk among the ancient trees and meet the playful Barbary macaques who call this forest home.

Continuing south, we will pass through Midelt, a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas mountain ranges. From here, the landscape begins its dramatic transformation. The highlight of our drive is the incredible Ziz Valley, a massive oasis where a ribbon of millions of palm trees cuts a lush green path through the arid, red-toned canyon. The views from the overlooks are simply breathtaking. As the afternoon unfolds, you will see the first golden dunes rising on the horizon. We will arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, where you will be welcomed with a traditional glass of mint tea.

Then, you will meet your camel and begin your trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The profound silence, the gentle rhythm of the camel’s gait, and the shifting colors of the sand as the sun sets are a truly magical combination. Your day concludes at our comfortable desert camp, where a delicious dinner and a night under the stars await you.

Day 2 → Merzouga → Erfoud → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Fes

We recommend waking before dawn today to witness a sight you will never forget: the sunrise over the Sahara. Watching the first rays of light crest over the dunes, painting the sand in shades of pink, orange, and gold, is a deeply peaceful and spiritual experience. After the sunrise, you will enjoy a hearty breakfast at the camp. You can then choose to ride your camel back to the edge of the dunes or take our comfortable 4×4 vehicle.

Once we reunite with your driver, our return journey to Fes begins. Our route takes us through Erfoud, a town famous for its fossil workshops, where you can see how millions of years of natural history have been preserved in stone. We will then journey back through the beautiful Ziz Valley, seeing its splendor in the fresh morning light.

The drive through the Middle Atlas offers a relaxing opportunity to reflect on your incredible Morocco desert adventure. We will stop for lunch along the way before continuing our drive through the cedar forests and Ifrane. We expect to arrive back in Fes in the early evening, where your driver will drop you off at your accommodation, bringing your unforgettable 2-day journey to a close.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the camel ride in Merzouga?

The camel trek from the edge of the dunes to the desert camp takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. We time it perfectly to coincide with the sunset, creating the most magical experience possible. The ride itself is gentle and suitable for most fitness levels.

What kind of accommodation is provided in the desert?

You will stay in a traditional and comfortable Berber-style desert camp. Your private tent will have proper beds with mattresses, blankets, and pillows. The camp has clean, shared Western-style flush toilets and washbasin facilities in a separate block.

Is this tour suitable for children or elderly travelers?

Yes, this tour can be enjoyed by a wide range of travelers. Because the tour is private, we can adjust the pace to your needs. The main consideration is the long driving time. For anyone who prefers not to ride a camel, we can arrange for our 4×4 to take you directly to the camp.

Can the itinerary be customized?

While the 2-day timeframe is quite fixed due to the driving distance, we can certainly make small adjustments. If you have specific interests, such as photography or fossils, please let us know, and we can tailor the stops to your preferences.

What should I pack for the desert?

We recommend light layers. During the day, comfortable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are essential. For the evening and early morning, it can be cool, so a warm jacket or fleece is highly recommended, especially from autumn to spring. Closed-toe shoes are best for walking.

How long is the daily driving time?

This is an adventurous tour with significant driving. Each day involves approximately 7 to 8 hours of driving time. However, this is broken up into smaller segments with plenty of interesting stops for photos, walks, and lunch, making the journey enjoyable and scenic rather than tiresome.

I came to Morocco with one dream: to see the Sahara Desert. This tour didn’t just meet my expectations; it completely blew them away. Words can’t quite capture the feeling of riding a camel as the sun sets, casting long shadows over the endless orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. The silence is profound. Our guide was wonderful, making sure we had the best spot to watch the colors change. I was expecting a basic tent, but the luxury desert camp was an incredible surprise. We had a proper bed, an en-suite bathroom, and a delicious tagine dinner under the stars. Speaking of the stars… I have never in my life seen a sky so clear and bright. It felt like you could reach out and touch the Milky Way. That single night in the desert was the highlight of my entire trip to Morocco. It’s a peaceful, soul-stirring experience I will hold onto forever. Thank you, True Morocco Travel, for making this dream a reality.

This tour was so much more than just stunning landscapes; it was a genuine immersion into Moroccan culture and history. Every day brought something new. Walking through the ancient kasbah of Ait Benhaddou felt like stepping back in time, and our driver, Ibrahim, shared so many stories that brought the history to life. A real highlight for us was the guided tour in Fes. Our local guide, Fatima, was indispensable. She navigated the labyrinth of the medina with ease, showing us hidden artisan workshops, the famous tanneries, and explaining the deep history of the city. We never would have discovered these places on our own. We also loved the small, authentic moments, like stopping to listen to Gnawa musicians in a desert village and learning about the Berber way of life. If you want to understand Morocco beyond the surface, this is the tour for you. Highly, highly recommended.

As a family traveling with two teenagers, the thought of organizing a multi-day trip across Morocco was a bit daunting. Choosing True Morocco Travel was the best decision we made. From the first email, their communication was clear and professional. The entire journey was completely seamless. Our driver and guide, Youssef, was the absolute star of the trip. He was a fantastic, safe driver, and his knowledge of the country was incredible. More than that, he was kind, patient, and had a great sense of humor that our kids loved. The 4×4 vehicle was modern, clean, and comfortable, which made the long drives enjoyable. Youssef knew all the best places to stop for photos, the cleanest bathrooms, and the most delicious, non-touristy spots for lunch. They took care of every single detail, allowing us to just relax and enjoy the adventure as a family. The peace of mind was priceless. Don’t hesitate to book with them!

If you want to feel like you’ve truly seen Morocco, this is the tour. We were amazed at how much we experienced in just six days without ever feeling rushed. The variety was incredible. One day we were crossing the dramatic, winding passes of the High Atlas Mountains, the next we were exploring the stunning red rock cliffs of the Todra Gorge, and then we were on camels trekking into the vast Sahara desert. The tour is paced perfectly, with the driving days broken up by fascinating stops at kasbahs, valleys, and viewpoints. It’s the perfect balance of natural beauty and cultural exploration. To go from the quiet majesty of the desert to the vibrant, buzzing energy of the Fes medina was an amazing contrast that made us feel like we experienced the full spectrum of the country. This isn’t just a desert tour; it’s a complete Moroccan adventure. We couldn’t have asked for a better-planned trip.
