Morocco Itinerary Tangier to Marrakech

Day 1: Arrival in Tangier – The Gateway to Africa

Your grand Moroccan adventure begins the moment you arrive. We will be waiting to greet you with a warm welcome at the Tangier airport or port, ready to assist you with your luggage. From there, we will escort you in a comfortable, private vehicle to your charming hotel.

Once you are settled, you will have time to breathe and soak in the unique energy of this legendary port city, a place where African, European, and Mediterranean cultures have mingled for centuries. Depending on your arrival time, we might have a chance to glimpse city highlights like the historic Kasbah or the windswept Cap Spartel lighthouse, giving you a perfect first taste of the wonders that lie ahead.

Day 2: Tangier – Chefchaouen – The Blue Pearl

After a delicious breakfast, we will say goodbye to Tangier and begin our picturesque journey toward the Rif Mountains. The drive itself is a beautiful introduction to the landscapes of Northern Morocco. As we approach our destination, you will understand why Chefchaouen is world famous. The first sight of its azure-washed buildings, nestled perfectly against the rugged green mountains, is simply breathtaking.

Upon arrival, you will have the entire afternoon to lose yourself in its peaceful, winding medina. We encourage you to wander at your own pace, discovering hidden squares, vibrant artisan shops, and countless perfect photo opportunities around every enchanting blue corner. Tonight, you will settle into your beautiful riad and let the serene ambiance of this one-of-a-kind town wash over you.

Day 3: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes

Wake up to the tranquil morning air of the blue city. We invite you to enjoy a final coffee on a terrace overlooking its captivating streets before we continue our journey into the heart of Morocco’s imperial past. Our first major stop is the incredible Roman ruins of Volubilis.

A designated UNESCO World Heritage site, here you can walk among ancient mosaics, standing columns, and the remains of a once-thriving city, imagining life in a bygone era. From there, we drive to the imperial city of Meknes, a grand and powerful city built by Sultan Moulay Ismail. You will marvel at its historic sites, including the monumental and beautifully preserved Bab Mansour gate.

As the day draws to a close, we will arrive in Fes, the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco. We will bring you to your authentic riad for the night, a perfect sanctuary within this mesmerizing city.

Day 4: Fes – Ifrane – Cedars Forest – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Sahara

Today is a day of magnificent transitions as your immersive Sahara adventure begins. Departing from Fes, we head south, climbing into the captivating scenery of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our journey will first take us to the charming town of Ifrane, often called “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its alpine-style architecture and crisp, clean air. We continue to the ancient Cedars Forest of Azrou, where you can stretch your legs and meet the playful Barbary Macaques that call this forest home.

After a lunch stop in the apple-growing town of Midelt, our drive takes us over the Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass, revealing stunning new landscapes. You will be amazed by the lush oasis of the Ziz Valley, a ribbon of green with millions of palm trees. As afternoon light bathes the landscape, the golden sands of the Sahara will finally appear on the horizon.

Here in Merzouga, your unforgettable camel trek begins, carrying you into the vast, silent sea of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You will arrive at your luxury desert camp in time for a spectacular sunset, followed by a delicious dinner and an evening of traditional Berber music around a crackling campfire, all under a breathtaking blanket of stars.

Day 5: Merzouga Sahara – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

We recommend waking early today for a truly magnificent spectacle: the Saharan sunrise. Watching the colors shift across the dunes as the sun appears is a memory you will cherish forever. After a wonderful breakfast at the camp, you will ride your camel back to Merzouga, where our vehicle and driver will be waiting. We then depart the desert, heading first to Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region. You will have a chance to explore its traditional souk, a vibrant hub of local trade where people from the surrounding desert communities gather.

Our journey continues to Erfoud, a town famous for its incredible fossilized marble workshops, where you can see how geological treasures from millions of years ago are uncovered and crafted. Driving through the beautiful Touroug and Tinjdad palm groves, we will arrive at the Todra Gorges. These towering canyon walls, carved by the Todra River, create a stunning natural wonder that is perfect for a leisurely walk.

After lunch, we will proceed to the enchanting Dades Valley, known for its otherworldly rock formations, often called “monkey fingers,” and its long string of oases and kasbahs. We will stop for a panoramic view of the valley before you settle into your comfortable hotel for dinner.

Day 6: Dades Valley – Roses Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

After a final breakfast overlooking the stunning Dades Valley, we begin the last, and equally spectacular, leg of your grand tour. We will pass through Kalaa Magouna, the heart of the Roses Valley, famous for its fragrant rose products and annual festival.

Our drive then takes us along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” to the lush palm groves of Skoura, where we will visit the impressive Kasbah Amridil, a beautifully preserved fortress. Soon, we will reach Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” where you have the option to visit its world-renowned film studios or the historic Taourirt Kasbah.

The absolute highlight of the day awaits as we visit the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. This breathtaking fortified village, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been the cinematic backdrop for countless films and is a true wonder to explore. After a thorough visit, we will continue through the former caravan route stop of Telouet before we begin our scenic ascent into the majestic High Atlas Mountains. The drive across the famous Tizi-N-Tichka pass offers jaw-dropping panoramic views of the rugged landscape.

As we descend, the vibrant “Red City” of Marrakech will come into view. Our journey together concludes as we ensure you are comfortably dropped off at the airport or your accommodation, filled with incredible memories from your unforgettable 6-day Moroccan adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much spending money should I budget?

We suggest budgeting for daily lunches (approximately 10-15 EUR per person), drinks, souvenirs, and entrance fees. The amount can vary greatly depending on your personal spending habits.

Is the tour suitable for children or elderly travelers?

Yes, this tour is wonderfully suited for a wide range of travelers. We’ve hosted families with young children and more senior guests with great success. Because the tour is private, we can adjust the pace. The driving days are broken up with plenty of interesting stops. The only consideration is the camel ride, which is optional; anyone who prefers not to ride a camel can be driven directly to the camp in our 4×4 vehicle.

Do you cater to dietary restrictions?

Yes, we absolutely do. Moroccan cuisine is very adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have any allergies, we can ensure your meals are delicious and safe. Please just inform us of your dietary needs at the time of booking so we can make the necessary arrangements with our partner hotels and our camp cook.

What cultural etiquette should we be aware of?

Moroccans are warm and welcoming. We recommend dressing modestly, especially when visiting rural areas or religious sites (covering shoulders and knees). Always ask for permission before taking a photo of a person. Your guide will offer helpful advice throughout your journey.

What type of luggage should I bring for such a diverse trip?

We recommend packing one manageable suitcase or duffel bag and a smaller daypack. For the overnight desert excursion, you will only need to take your essentials in your daypack, leaving the main luggage securely with our driver. Pack layers, as temperatures can vary significantly from the mountains to the desert.

Are the camel treks safe and suitable for everyone?

Yes, our camel treks are very safe and led by experienced local guides. The camels are gentle, and the ride is taken at a slow, leisurely pace. It is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange for a 4×4 transfer to the desert camp.

Is this Tangier to Marrakech desert tour suitable for families or solo travelers?

Absolutely. Because this is a private tour, we can tailor the pace to your needs. It is wonderful for families seeking a diverse adventure, and it is a safe, enriching, and well-supported experience for solo travelers who will have a dedicated guide throughout their journey.

How challenging are the drives, especially through the Atlas Mountains?

While some days involve several hours of driving to cover the incredible distances, your comfort is our priority. We travel in a comfortable, modern vehicle and make plenty of stops for photos, refreshments, and sightseeing. The drive through the High Atlas Mountains is on a paved, winding road and offers some of the most spectacular scenery of the entire trip.

I came to Morocco with my camera, hoping to capture its beauty, and this tour delivered beyond my wildest dreams. The transition of landscapes from the blue city to the Roman ruins, the cedar forests, the vast desert, the dramatic gorges, and finally the High Atlas mountains was a photographer’s paradise. Every single day offered unique and breathtaking visual opportunities. Our driver knew all the best panoramic spots and was patient with my constant requests to stop for a photo. We traveled as a family of four with two teenagers, and this tour was a dream come true for everyone. True Morocco Travel handled everything flawlessly. The kids loved the camel ride and sleeping in the luxury desert camp, which was surprisingly comfortable! I personally fell in love with Chefchaouen and the history of Ait Ben Haddou. Our guide, Ibrahim, was fantastic with the kids, sharing stories and jokes that kept them engaged the whole way. A private tour was the best decision for us, and this company delivered an authentic, safe, and truly memorable experience.
