Morocco desert Itinerary Marrakech to Fes 5 Days Tour

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate

Our journey together begins this morning as your private driver greets you at your accommodation in Marrakech. The excitement is tangible as we leave the city’s lively pace behind and begin our ascent into the magnificent High Atlas Mountains. We’ll wind our way up the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass, a spectacular road that reveals stunning views at every turn. We will stop often, allowing you to step out, breathe the crisp mountain air, and capture photos of the terraced Berber villages built into the hillsides.

The highlight of our day is a visit to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. As you cross the riverbed and enter this UNESCO World Heritage site, you are stepping into another era. This fortified village of earthen clay has been the backdrop for countless films, but its true magic lies in the stories etched into its walls. We will wander through its labyrinthine alleys to the top for a panoramic view of the ancient caravan route.

Afterward, we continue to Ouarzazate, a city known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” for its film studios. We can visit the impressive Kasbah of Taourirt before settling into your comfortable and charming riad for the night, where a delicious dinner awaits.

Day 2: Ouarzazate → Skoura Oasis → Valley of Roses → Dades Valley

After a peaceful breakfast, today’s journey takes us along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” a route rich with history and stunning natural beauty. Our first stop is the Skoura Oasis, a vast and verdant palm grove where we will visit the beautifully preserved Kasbah Amridil. Here, you can get a true sense of traditional life inside these incredible fortifications. From Skoura, we drive towards the Valley of Roses, a region famous for its Damascus roses, which are harvested each spring to produce fragrant rosewater and oils.

The landscape grows increasingly dramatic as we enter the Dades Valley. The river has carved a breathtaking gorge, and the rock formations, known locally as the “monkey fingers,” are a geological wonder. We will follow the winding road up into the gorge itself, marveling at the sheer cliffs and the ribbon of green oasis below. Your destination for the night is a lovely guesthouse nestled in the heart of this stunning valley. Here, you can relax on the terrace, listen to the gentle sound of the river, and enjoy another wonderful Moroccan dinner, surrounded by the quiet majesty of the mountains.

Day 3: Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Erfoud → Merzouga Camel Trek

This morning, after breakfast with views of the valley, we continue our Dades Valley tour before heading towards one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural sights: the Todra Gorges. The canyon walls here soar over 300 meters high, creating a narrow, awe-inspiring passage. We will have plenty of time to walk along the cool riverbed, appreciating the sheer scale and grandeur of this place.

From Todra, the landscape begins its final, captivating transformation. We will pass through the palm-lined towns of Tinjdad and Erfoud, a town known for its unique fossil discoveries. You can feel the atmosphere change as we draw closer to the desert. And then, you will see them. Rising from the horizon like golden waves, the dunes of Erg Chebbi are a sight that will stop you in your tracks.

Upon arrival in the village of Merzouga, on the edge of the great Sahara, you will be welcomed with a warm glass of mint tea. We will then introduce you to your camel companions for a truly magical trek into the desert. The slow, rhythmic pace of the camels and the profound silence of the dunes create a meditative and unforgettable experience as we make our way to our camp. We time the journey perfectly for you to witness a breathtaking sunset over the sands.

Your first night in our desert camp will be spent enjoying a traditional meal, listening to Berber drums around a campfire, and gazing up at a sky full of stars so bright they feel within reach.

Day 4: Full Day of Merzouga Desert Exploration by 4x4

Today is dedicated to a deeper exploration of the Morocco Sahara adventure. This is the gift of a 5-day tour—the time to truly connect with this incredible environment. After a serene sunrise and breakfast, we will embark on a 4×4 journey around the Erg Chebbi dunes. Our off-road adventure will take us to visit a local nomad family, where you will be graciously welcomed into their tent to share tea and learn about their resilient, semi-nomadic lifestyle. This is a genuine and heartwarming cultural exchange.

Next, we will drive to the village of Khamlia. Here, we will listen to the spiritual and hypnotic sounds of Gnawa music, played by descendants of people from sub-Saharan Africa. Their powerful music is an integral part of the desert’s cultural fabric. We may also visit the seasonal lake of Merzouga, which attracts flocks of flamingos and other birdlife after the rains. After enjoying a traditional Berber pizza for lunch, we’ll return to the camp in the afternoon. You’ll have time to relax, try sandboarding on the high dunes, or simply find a peaceful spot to read and reflect, letting the profound silence of the desert envelop you. A second night here allows the magic to sink in even deeper.

Day 5: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Ifrane → Fes

We recommend waking early for one last Saharan sunrise, a truly soul-stirring experience. After breakfast, we will begin our journey north towards Fes. Though it is a longer day of driving, the scenery is wonderfully diverse and captivating. Our route takes us first through the magnificent Ziz Valley, a vast oasis where millions of palm trees create a spectacular ribbon of green cutting through the arid landscape.

We then climb into the cooler climes of the Middle Atlas Mountains, a world away from the desert. We’ll stop for lunch in the town of Midelt, known for its apple orchards. One of our most popular stops is in the vast cedar forests near Azrou, where you can walk amongst the ancient trees and meet the playful Barbary macaques that live here. Our final stop before Fes is Ifrane, a clean and orderly town often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine architecture. From there, it’s a smooth drive to your final destination. We will arrive in the ancient city of Fes in the early evening, dropping you at your accommodation and bringing your incredible Marrakech to Fes desert itinerary to a close, leaving you with memories to last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour private?

Yes, absolutely. All of our tours are private. This means it will only be you, your travel companions, and your dedicated driver and guide. This allows for wonderful flexibility, so we can stop whenever you wish for photos or simply to take in a view. It’s your adventure, at your pace.

How long is the camel ride in Merzouga?

The camel trek from the edge of the dunes to our camp takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. It’s timed perfectly to coincide with the setting sun, creating the most magical experience possible. The ride is gentle and suitable for most people. For the return journey in the morning, you can choose to ride the camel again or take our 4×4 vehicle back from the camp.

Can we upgrade the desert camp?

Yes, you can. While our standard camp is already very comfortable, clean, and beautiful, with private tents and proper beds, we do offer an upgrade to an ultra-luxury camp. These camps feature larger, more opulent tents with private en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and more elaborate furnishings. Just let us know your preference when you inquire, and we can provide the details for your luxury Erg Chebbi desert camp experience.

What should I pack for the Sahara?

We recommend packing light layers. For the day, you’ll want light, comfortable clothing (like cotton or linen), sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. For the evening and early morning, it can get surprisingly chilly in the desert, so a warm fleece or jacket is essential, especially in the winter months. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are best for walking in the sand and exploring the kasbahs. And of course, don’t forget your camera!

Is the tour suitable for children or elderly travelers?

Yes, this tour is wonderfully suited for a wide range of travelers. We’ve hosted families with young children and more senior guests with great success. Because the tour is private, we can adjust the pace. The driving days are broken up with plenty of interesting stops. The only consideration is the camel ride, which is optional; anyone who prefers not to ride a camel can be driven directly to the camp in our 4×4 vehicle.

Do you cater to dietary restrictions?

Yes, we absolutely do. Moroccan cuisine is very adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have any allergies, we can ensure your meals are delicious and safe. Please just inform us of your dietary needs at the time of booking so we can make the necessary arrangements with our partner hotels and our camp cook.

Our 3-day tour from Marrakech to Fes was unforgettable! The landscapes were stunning, but what made it special was Hassan. He treated us like family and shared so much about Berber culture. The desert camp was magical. Thank you, True Morocco Travel!

We booked this trip for the Sahara experience, and it was absolutely incredible—the camel ride, the music around the fire, the stars—it was everything we hoped for. But what truly surprised us was how much we loved the rest of the journey! The drive through the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” was fascinating for the whole family. Our kids especially loved exploring the Todra Gorge, walking along the river with those towering canyon walls on either side. The stop in Ifrane, the “Little Switzerland” of Morocco, was another unexpected highlight that showed us a completely different side of the country. Our guide, Said, was brilliant with the kids, keeping them engaged with stories and fun facts. This tour is a complete adventure that showcases the incredible variety of Morocco’s culture and geography. It’s a journey we’ll be talking about for years to come.

For any photographer, amateur or pro, this tour is an absolute dream. The diversity of landscapes you cover in five days is just staggering. I came home with thousands of photos. One hour you’re capturing the earthy red tones of a kasbah against a brilliant blue sky, the next it’s the dramatic, winding switchbacks of the Dades Gorge. Then, of course, there’s the Sahara. The endless, shifting dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset and sunrise are a spectacle that photos can’t truly capture, but I certainly tried! Our driver, Ismail, was fantastic and seemed to know every single secret viewpoint along the way, pulling over safely so I could get the perfect shot. The journey from the desert to Fes offered yet another palette, with lush green palm groves in the Ziz Valley and the surprising cedar forests with Barbary apes. My camera roll is full, but the memories are even more vivid. Highly recommend!

We were worried a desert tour might feel like a race, but this 5-day itinerary was paced to perfection. We never felt rushed and had ample time to truly soak in the incredible sights. The extra day compared to shorter tours made all the difference, allowing for a more relaxed drive through the Dades Valley and more time to explore places like the magnificent Ait Benhaddou kasbah without watching the clock. Our guide, Hamid, was phenomenal. He was a fountain of knowledge but also knew when to just let us enjoy the quiet majesty of the landscapes. The long drives were broken up perfectly with interesting stops, great food, and comfortable, charming riads each night. Of course, the desert night was the ultimate highlight, but the journey there and onwards to Fes felt just as much a part of the adventure. If you want to see the best of southern Morocco without feeling exhausted, this is the one.
