Grand Morocco Tour Itinerary Tangier to Casablanca

Day 1: Arrival in Tangier & Journey to Chefchaouen

Your 10-day Morocco holiday from Tangier kicks off with an exciting first day. We will greet you with a warm welcome at the airport or port in Tangier, the “bride of the north.” We will immediately begin our exploration of this vibrant city where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, visiting the legendary Cave of Hercules and the breathtaking Cape Spartel. After some free time for lunch, we will begin our beautiful drive south, traveling through the city of Tetouan and into the heart of the scenic Rif Mountains. We will make several stops for stunning panoramic views before arriving in the magical blue city of Chefchaouen, where we will ensure you are comfortably settled into your hotel for the night.

Day 2: A Day of Sightseeing in Chefchaouen, the Blue City

Today is a gift of time, a day to fully explore Chefchaouen without a long drive ahead. After breakfast, you have the entire day to fall in love with the city also known as Achaoun, or “the horns.” We invite you to wander at your own pace through its charming old medina, getting lost in a maze of impossibly blue alleys and discovering countless beautiful, authentic blue doors.

After lunch, we highly recommend the leisurely hike up to the Spanish Mosque, which sits on high ground. From here, you will be rewarded with a spectacular, panoramic view of the entire blue city as the sun begins to set—a truly unforgettable moment. You will spend the night in the same hotel.

Day 3: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes

After a final breakfast and perhaps one last stroll through the enchanting alleyways of Chefchaouen, we will continue our journey toward Morocco’s imperial heartland. Our first destination is the magnificent ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. A recognized UNESCO World Heritage site, it is incredibly well-preserved, and you can wander among beautiful mosaics, ancient pillars, and grand archways. After our visit, we drive just 30 km to explore Meknes, the grand Ismaili capital.

Here, we will visit historic sites including the monumental Bab Al-Mansour gate and the Royal Stables. As the day draws to a close, we head to Fes, where you will spend the night in a beautiful, traditional riad.

Day 4: Guided Tour & Sightseeing in Fes

Following breakfast in your riad, we will dedicate the day to exploring the incredible city of Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural center. We begin with a visit to the grand gates of the Royal Palace, before delving into the well-preserved medieval Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. With your expert local guide leading the way, you will enter through the Blue Gate (Bab Boujloud) and into a living museum.

You will visit the historic Medrasa Bouanania, the beautiful Nejjarine fountain, the famous Tanneries, and the legendary Quaraouin Mosque and University—the oldest in the world. Afterwards, we will visit the Jewish Quarter, or “Mellah,” before driving to an ancient fortress for a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city. We will then return you to your riad for the night.

Day 5: Fes – Ifrane – Cedars Forest – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Sahara

Today your grand tour continues south into a world of changing landscapes. We leave Fes behind and travel through the Middle Atlas Mountains to Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine-style architecture and cool climate.

We will then continue to the ancient Cedars Forest, where the playful Barbary Macaques live. After free time for lunch in Midelt, we will cross the Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass and journey along the magnificent Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views of its vast palm groves.

In the afternoon, we will reach the Sahara Desert of Merzouga. Here, you will switch to your camel and begin a peaceful trek across the stunning sandy sea of Erg Chebbi, stopping atop a high dune to witness the incredible sunset. You will then continue to your luxury desert camp, where you can enjoy traditional Berber music around a campfire, all under a vast, open sky full of stars.

Day 6: Explore Merzouga Region & Deep Desert Immersion

After breakfast, we will dedicate the entire day to exploring the diverse and fascinating Merzouga region. This area is rich with incredible sites, from sand dunes and wild lakes to mines and fossil areas. Our 4×4 journey will take us off-road to visit an ancient eyeliner mine, and then to a visit with a local nomad family in their handmade woven tent, where you will share a Berber tea and learn about their unique way of life.

Our next destination is Khamlia village, where you will be captivated by the traditional Gnawa music and dancing of its inhabitants, who originate from sub-Saharan countries. After lunch, we will take a stroll through a cool palm grove before driving a few kilometers to see the wild lake of Merzouga, a seasonal home to flocks of flamingos. You will spend tonight in a comfortable hotel in Merzouga.

Day 7: Merzouga Sahara – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

Waking up early to watch the sunrise over the Sahara is an experience you will not want to miss. After a free morning for breakfast, we will leave the desert and visit Rissani town, the ancient capital of Tafilalet.

Rissani is a major trading center with a large souk that is particularly vibrant on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. We then continue to Erfoud to visit a workshop of fossilized marble before driving through the Touroug and Tinjdad palm groves to reach the magnificent Todra Gorges. Here, the river has carved a grand canyon through the mountains, and its high, red cliff sides are perfect for a leisurely walk.

After lunch, we will continue to the beautiful Dades Valley, stopping to admire the famous “monkey fingers” rock formation and to take in the view from a spot overlooking the entire valley. Dinner and your overnight stay will be in a hotel here.

Day 8: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

After breakfast, our trip continues toward Marrakech. We will first pass through Kalaa Magouna to visit the beautiful Rose Valley, home to the annual Rose Festival. We then drive through the lush palm groves of Skoura, visiting the impressive Kasbah of Amredhyle.

Upon reaching Ouarzazate, we will have time to see the film studios and the historic Taourirt Kasbah. Then we depart for the legendary Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage site that has appeared in countless movies and TV series, including Game of Thrones.

After visiting this iconic site and the nearby Telouet Kasbah, we will continue our scenic journey to Marrakech, crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, with stops for photos along the way. You will spend the night in a traditional Riad in Marrakech.

Day 9: Guided Tour & Sightseeing in Marrakech

After a warm breakfast, we will spend the day exploring the incredible highlights of Marrakech with an expert local guide. As one of Morocco’s great imperial cities, it is full of history and energy. Your visit will include the beautiful Bahia Palace, the historic Saadian Tombs, and a stroll through the largest traditional souk in Morocco.

After free time for lunch near the famous Jemaa El-Fna square, you will visit the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, the largest in Marrakech, and the tranquil Majorelle Garden. After we transfer you back to your accommodation, we encourage you to wander back to the Jemaa El-Fna square on your own to experience its magical transformation at night.

Day 10: Marrakech – Casablanca Airport for Departure

After your final Moroccan breakfast, we will pick you up from your riad in Marrakech. Depending on your flight schedule, we may have enough time to drive to Casablanca and visit the magnificent Hassan II Mosque before we ensure you arrive at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) with plenty of time for your flight home. This marks the end of your unforgettable 10-day Morocco holiday.

Is the tour suitable for children or elderly travelers?

Yes, this tour is wonderfully suited for a wide range of travelers. We’ve hosted families with young children and more senior guests with great success. Because the tour is private, we can adjust the pace. The driving days are broken up with plenty of interesting stops. The only consideration is the camel ride, which is optional; anyone who prefers not to ride a camel can be driven directly to the camp in our 4×4 vehicle.

What will we do on the full day of desert exploration?

Your day will be a private 4×4 tour with your guide. You will visit the village of Khamlia to experience traditional Gnawa music and spend meaningful time with a local Berber nomad family to learn about their way of life. It’s a day of culture, adventure, and connection.

Are the camel treks safe and suitable for everyone?

Yes, our camel treks are very safe and led by experienced local guides. The camels are gentle, and the ride is taken at a slow, leisurely pace. It is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange for a 4×4 transfer to the desert camp.

Do you cater to dietary restrictions?

Yes, we absolutely do. Moroccan cuisine is very adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have any allergies, we can ensure your meals are delicious and safe. Please just inform us of your dietary needs at the time of booking so we can make the necessary arrangements with our partner hotels and our camp cook.

Is this Tangier to Marrakech desert tour suitable for families or solo travelers?

Absolutely. Because this is a private tour, we can tailor the pace to your needs. It is wonderful for families seeking a diverse adventure, and it is a safe, enriching, and well-supported experience for solo travelers who will have a dedicated guide throughout their journey.

What cultural etiquette should we be aware of?

Moroccans are warm and welcoming. We recommend dressing modestly, especially when visiting rural areas or religious sites (covering shoulders and knees). Always ask for permission before taking a photo of a person. Your guide will offer helpful advice throughout your journey.
