Morocco Desert Tours Itinerary Casablanca to Marrakech

Day 1: Arrival to Casablanca – Moroccan Welcome

Your grand Moroccan adventure begins the moment you land. We will be there to greet you warmly upon your arrival at Casablanca airport and provide a comfortable, private transfer to your hotel. After you have had time to settle in, you can take an initial stroll to feel the rhythm of Morocco’s bustling economic capital. Depending on your arrival time, we might have a chance to glimpse some of the city’s impressive highlights, setting the stage for the incredible journey ahead. You are finally here, and your Moroccan story starts now.

Day 2: Casablanca – The Roman Ruins of Volubilis – Meknes – Fes

After a delicious breakfast, our exploration begins at the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. Standing proudly by the Atlantic, its sheer scale and intricate detail are truly a sight to behold. From this modern marvel, we journey inland, traveling back in time towards Morocco’s imperial past.

Our path leads us to the impressive Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you can wander through ancient, wonderfully preserved mosaics and columns, imagining life in this once-thriving Roman outpost. Next, we arrive in the imperial city of Meknes, a city of grand gates and historical power.

We will admire its most famous landmarks, including the monumental Bab Mansour gate. As the day draws to a close, we will arrive in the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco, Fes, where you will check into your charming riad for the night, ready to explore its secrets tomorrow.

Day 3: Fes – Ifrane – Cedars Forest – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Sahara

Today, our path turns towards the desert. We depart from Fes, winding south through the captivating landscapes of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop is the charming town of Ifrane, often called “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its unique alpine architecture and immaculate streets.

We continue our ascent to the ancient Cedars Forest of Azrou, where you can breathe in the crisp mountain air and meet the region’s playful Barbary Macaques. After a lunch break in Midelt, our journey continues over the scenic Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass, revealing the stunning and verdant oasis of the Ziz Valley. The sight of millions of palm trees creating a river of green in the arid landscape is unforgettable.

As the afternoon unfolds, the landscape transforms again, and the mesmerizing golden sands of the Merzouga Sahara appear on the horizon. Here, you will trade your vehicle for a camel and begin an unforgettable trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Your camel ride leads you to our comfortable desert camp, where you will spend a magical night under an endless canopy of stars, enjoying a traditional dinner and the sound of Berber music around a crackling campfire.

Day 4: Merzouga Sahara – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

We will wake you early to witness a truly magnificent spectacle: the Sahara sunrise. Watching the colors shift across the silent dunes is a peaceful and powerful start to the day. After breakfast in the camp, we will return by camel to Merzouga, where our private vehicle awaits.

We then depart the desert, making our way to Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region. You can stroll through its authentic and bustling souk, a vibrant hub of local trade. Our journey continues through stunning desert landscapes to the dramatic Todra Gorges.

Here, towering red canyon walls, carved by the Todra River, reach up to 300 meters high. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely walk to appreciate the sheer force of nature. After lunch, we proceed to the enchanting Dades Valley, admiring its unique rock formations, often called “monkey fingers,” and pausing for spectacular panoramic views.

Your day concludes with dinner and a relaxing overnight stay at a comfortable hotel nestled in the heart of the Dades Valley.

Day 5: Dades Valley – Roses Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

After breakfast, we begin the final, spectacular leg of our journey. We will drive through Kalaa Magouna, the heart of the Roses Valley, renowned for its fragrant rose products. Our route then takes us along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” through the serene palm groves of Skoura, where the beautifully preserved Kasbah of Amridil stands as a testament to traditional Moroccan architecture.

We continue to Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa,” with options to visit its famous film studios and the historic Taourirt Kasbah. The absolute highlight of the day awaits as we journey to the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a breathtaking fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage site that has served as a backdrop for epic films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

After exploring its ancient, winding alleys, we begin our ascent into the majestic High Atlas Mountains. You will be captivated by the dramatic landscapes as we cross the famed Tizi-N-Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters. As we descend from the mountains, we arrive in the vibrant “Red City” of Marrakech, where we will provide a comfortable drop-off at the airport or your accommodation, marking the seamless conclusion of your unforgettable 5-day Moroccan discovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much spending money should I budget?

We suggest budgeting for daily lunches (approximately 10-15 EUR per person), drinks, souvenirs, and entrance fees. The amount can vary greatly depending on your personal spending habits.

Is the tour suitable for children or elderly travelers?

Yes, this tour is wonderfully suited for a wide range of travelers. We’ve hosted families with young children and more senior guests with great success. Because the tour is private, we can adjust the pace. The driving days are broken up with plenty of interesting stops. The only consideration is the camel ride, which is optional; anyone who prefers not to ride a camel can be driven directly to the camp in our 4×4 vehicle.

How long is the camel ride in Merzouga?

The camel trek from the edge of the dunes to our camp takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. It’s timed perfectly to coincide with the setting sun, creating the most magical experience possible. The ride is gentle and suitable for most people. For the return journey in the morning, you can choose to ride the camel again or take our 4×4 vehicle back from the camp.

Can we upgrade the desert camp?

Yes, you can. While our standard camp is already very comfortable, clean, and beautiful, with private tents and proper beds, we do offer an upgrade to an ultra-luxury camp. These camps feature larger, more opulent tents with private en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and more elaborate furnishings. Just let us know your preference when you inquire, and we can provide the details for your luxury Erg Chebbi desert camp experience.

Do you cater to dietary restrictions?

Yes, we absolutely do. Moroccan cuisine is very adaptable. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have any allergies, we can ensure your meals are delicious and safe. Please just inform us of your dietary needs at the time of booking so we can make the necessary arrangements with our partner hotels and our camp cook.

What cultural etiquette should we be aware of?

Moroccans are warm and welcoming. We recommend dressing modestly, especially when visiting rural areas or religious sites (covering shoulders and knees). Always ask for permission before taking a photo of a person. Your guide will offer helpful advice throughout your journey.

Couple Traveller

My wife and I have traveled extensively, and this tour with True Morocco Travel ranks among our all-time favorites. The itinerary is brilliantly designed to showcase the incredible diversity of this country. One day you are in the ancient, bustling medina of Fes, and a day later you are experiencing the profound silence of the Sahara. The desert camp was far more luxurious than we expected, and watching the sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes is a memory we will cherish forever. The entire experience felt personal, authentic, and professionally managed.

The Lee Family

Family Traveller

We booked the 5-day Casablanca to Marrakech tour for our family of four, including our two teenage kids, and it was the trip of a lifetime. The pace was perfect, with enough variety to keep everyone engaged. The kids absolutely loved riding the camels into the desert and running up the sand dunes, and exploring the “movie set” of Ait Ben Haddou was a huge highlight for them. The 4×4 was comfortable and spacious, and our guide, Omar, was fantastic with our children. Highly, highly recommend!

Solo Traveller

This 5-day tour was an absolute dream. As a solo traveler, I was looking for a company that was reputable and safe, and True Morocco Travel exceeded all my expectations. My driver, Hamid, was more than a guide; he was a friend. He shared so much about the culture, knew all the best photo stops, and made sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. Seeing the imperial cities and then sleeping under the stars in the Sahara in just five days was incredible. The logistics were flawless. I just had to sit back and enjoy the magic.
